My latest column for Asian Voice picks up on my experience at a recent Youth Question Time in Haringey:
One of the Labour panellists was talking about ‘ethnic minorities’ and a young black boy (name of Justin I believe) shot up his hand and said he was fed up with being labelled; fed up with being always thought of as ethnic minority; felt it put him in a box. I am an ethnic minority and proud of my contribution and the contribution of all ethnic communities to this ethnic nation. Never forget, Britain and the United States were built up by immigrant communities, whether people from minority faith or BME communities. Just look at the success of Jewish communities in the United States and the United Kingdom. They are ethnic minority and a very successful minority community.

Furthermore, I must put on record, I am very humbled by the contribution by the many role models from our diverse communities. Additionally, I love hearing the stories of 'rags to riches' by ethnic minorities in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the richest man in Britain Lakshmi Mittal is, as a matter of fact, a member of the British Asian community. Yes, indeed, an immigrant community which settled here in the 60s and 70s. This is what an immigrant community can manufacture. Mash |
