The new Serjeant at Arms

Excellent news: Mrs Jill Pay has been appointed to be the Serjeant at Arms at Parliament. First woman ever in the post - hurrah! She is lovely - and I am not surprised that she has been promoted so swiftly.

Hi Lynne, Not being funny but is that how its spelt? Unusual if it is. Why is it different from a Sergeant in the forces?

It is, but not got a clue why - other than - as with much of Parliament - it is something that dates back an awfully long way.

Do you not think it is a bit condescending to describe her as "lovely? What do you think she will she be like at her job?

Alex - well it wasn't meant to be taken the way you have taken it. I just really like her. In terms of ability to do the job - first rate - or she wouldn't have got it!
