Four sacked at Haringey over death of Baby P

The BBC reports:

A social worker and three managers have been sacked for failings in the care of Baby P, Haringey Council has said…

Haringey Council said Cecilia Hitchen, the deputy director of children and families, had been dismissed for “loss of trust and confidence” following the damning Ofsted report in December last year.

A council spokesman said social worker Maria Ward, team manager Gillie Christou and head of safeguarding services Clive Preece were sacked for gross misconduct.

It is an awful burden to bear – to carry responsibility for Baby P. I feel sympathy for Maria Ward in particular. It was hardly her wish or intent that the child came to the harm that he did. But she did err seriously and could have prevented the outcome had she acted in a more interventionist manner. He had no means of representing himself and Maria Ward was there on his behalf and sadly failed him. She has to live with that knowledge for the rest of her days and that is punishment in itself; probably more punishment than the guilty ever undergo. Nevertheless I doubt if this action really addresses the systemic nature of the problem that has beset Haringey. And it would be most unfair if her name was to become synonymous with the failings of Haringey.
