No need to re-invent the wheel. All MPs should be treated as businesses and made to register for VAT. Use the standard method (record everything). Then their VAT accounts to be published quarterly, within two months of the end of each accounting period.

Watching this scandal unfold over the past few days has been depressing. You never want to give in to cynicism. But, in this case, it would be hard not to feel cynical about all the wrongheadedness displayed by our elected officials. Why do so many of them feel that the the law and the rules do not apply to them? At least in this case speaker Martin, either on his own, or with some encouragement, did do right thing and tendered his resignation. It remains to be seen if the Labour government will put in place enough rules and sanctions, and the oversight to take the House in a new direction on this issue.
