To be fair I should think at least half of that has plenty to do with the traumatic nature of much of the work and it&#039;s long term psychological impact. Also there&#039;s the low pay too and pathetic compensation from suffering injuries which doesn&#039;t exactly help people to get onto the property ladder (or stay on it if severely injured).

Of course that doesn&#039;t mean Lynne&#039;s idea is especailly good - just defending those in the services.</description>

		<description>This is a terrible idea - a Daily-Mail-appealing idea (bring back conscription) dressed in Guardian clothes about aspiration horizons.  And guess what?  

It is actually, beneath it all, an excuse to continue imprisoning schoolchildren beyond school-leaving age.  And wouldn&#039;t that work so well?  It&#039;s so cheap and easy to get people in their late teens to do things that they don&#039;t want to do.

I think you should re-read your own label Lynne - are you really a Liberal?
