Bizarre comment - how on earth can I dictate what Lynne writes about? If only I could....!!

You say writing this blog hasn't affected her ability to address other topics - well, that's my point, she hasn't responded!

"Twenty years after the National Liberals went into the National Government of 1931 there were few enough Liberal MPs that a taxi could carry them to Westminster, and fewer still National Liberals left, a trivial addendum to the Conservative and Unionist Party."

And what is your point if you really even have one apart from making yourself feel better about the pending and I believe permanent retrenchment of Labour to its dying heartlands ?
By 1931 the Liberal Party was in the final stages of being driven out of the Industrial heartland by the Labour Party. That process could not then be reversed. What happened after or during the 1931 Coalition had nothing whatsoever to do with its objective position or results 20 years later. It was merely an historical re-alignment that would remain in place for as long as the 'conditions' supported it.
What you should instead fear is the exact reversal of that historical re-alignment now as Labour's old base has largely ceased to exist and it now relies on a client population of public employees, die-hard Unions, and un-assimilated immigrants. That was the purpose of New Labour --- to break out of the closing social trap and get Labour a new base in England. Blair and others saw clearly what was happening and set out to interdict it. That project has now failed, and Labour is again on the path to serious marginalization.

It's not the Liberals who have things to fear from this Coalition. It's Labour.

I also would like to see Lynne address the serious issues raised elsewhere on this blog - and for her to show some concern over a turn-out of 36%.

We don't dictate what Lynne writes about. She writes - and people respond with a variety of often well-thought-out posts with different viewpoints and questions. Then there is usually silence from our MP ... this is what people find objectionable and gives credence to Lynne's 'airhead' tag.

When holds of council seats by the National Liberals of seats formerly help by the Lib-Dems so excite their minions as to obtain accusations of petulance, And Lynn "loves it!" a certain degree of insecurity may be manifest?

Congratulations to the LibDem's I hope they can keep up the work but still keep to their agenda, it is great feeling to win when you have worked hard but you do have to remember that the whole point of being in power is to help the British public. The electorate do need to see things changing and in these uncertain times it is even more important to keep equality a main focus. I have had lots of conversations with people working in the public sector who are concentrating on savings and budget cuts, when I talk about equality they think this is taking a back seat due to the Tories view LibDems must keep the focus on this.

@BenC - What's childish is your insistence on dictating what Lynne should write about. Writing a very short post on this bi-election isn't going to affect her ability to address other topics. Quit being so petulant about it.

Lynne - this is a childish post. You sound like an over-excited teenager, not a government minister.

Rather than writing blogs on an election that wasn't in your constituency, perhaps you could give some kind of substantive response to the serious discussions which took place elsewhere on your blog on the rape proposal, or questions posed on faith schools and inclusion in special needs schools.

Will you be writing similar blogs on by-elections elsewhere? Will you say the Tories have bombed if you beat them? Thought not. If this is your idea of new politics, give us the old one back...

To draw any conclusions from a poor turn out is optimistic to say to the least. There is still good will towards this coalition from many, and I think we will not see any shift in voting patterns for at least two years. I think we can safely say that people will be worse off under this government, and whether the steadfast "blame 13 years if Labour mis-rule" will hold up is debatable. George Osborne does not look old enough to vote, let alone run the economy! His words fill me with abject fear..

As someone who voted for Lynne in 2005 and this time, I found this blog depressing. It is crowing and immature - the impression I always get from David Cameron. I am convinced that there will be a Lib Con merger in the next five years - Cameron and Clegg both clearly want it.

How ironic that Cleggmania may lead to the end of the Lib Dems - until you get rid of this dreadful man you will never have your party back.
