LIB DEMS SECURE MEASURES TO IMPROVE SAFETY ON SCHOOL ROAD

24.10.05

Following concerns raised by residents, local Lib Dem councillors have arranged for signs outside Highgate Primary School to be made clearer.

Residents were concerned that motorists approaching the school from the Highgate Village side could not get a clear view of the pedestrian crossing traffic lights outside the school. This was largely the result of overgrown branches on one side of the road, with the position of the 'School' warning sign also a possible issue on the other side.

Cllr Melanie Simpson (Lib Dem, Highgate) comments:

"Many cars have been driving past Highgate Primary and only seeing the traffic lights at the last moment - then having to screech to a halt. This is largely down to the fact that nearby trees have grown to obscure the red light in particular.

"I am glad that Haringey Council has agreed to cut back the branches which have been making the traffic lights difficult to see as drivers approach. This alone could help prevent an accident and help protect crossing schoolchildren."

Cllr Matt Davies (Lib Dem, Fortis Green) comments:

"The Council have advised us that there is no alternative position for the 'School' hazard sign, so will not be moving it to make the traffic lights more visible. We will continue to look at this situation - hopefully the action that is being taken will be sufficient on its own, but we will press the Council on this if necessary in the future."
