Laura Edge, Lib Dem councillor for Stroud Green has welcomed a successful bid to fund the erection of a mural to obscure a derelict area next to the railway line in Quernmore Road, N4.
The mural is to be funded from the Haringey Making the Difference budget, following a successful bid by residents, supported by Cllr Edge. It will be designed by a local artist working alongside local young people.
In addition, thanks to the hard work of local residents, Cllr Edge and officers in Haringey's Neighbourhood Management Team a bid has been made to the Arts Council for further funding for murals to be painted on the shutters of the shops and restaurants in Quernmore Road. If the bid is successful, the same artist will design the murals in consultation with the businesses and local people.
It is hoped that the murals will enhance the character of the area, help deter graffiti and make it feel safer, particularly at night.
Cllr Edge is delighted that something as innovative as the mural has been accepted and she is positive about the impact it will have on the area.
Cllr Edge (Stroud Green) comments:
"This is the most exciting project I have been involved in so far as a councillor. The mural is an innovative solution to a long-standing problem.
"It is all the more pleasing that this is a true community project with the idea put forward by a local resident and the mural to be created by a local artist and local young people, backed by residents."
