Haringey is still one of the worst boroughs in England for fly-tipping, according to new figures unearthed by the Lib Dems. Incidents of fly-tipping in the borough topped 68,000 last year, prompting local Lib Dems to question the Labour-run Council's track record on tackling the issue.
Despite these new statistics, the Labour Council claimed at a recent meeting of the Full Council (15th October 2007) that they were 'one of the leading authorities tackling fly-tipping'.
Cllr Ed Butcher (Stroud Green) comments:
"I am appalled that Haringey Council is more concerned with congratulating itself and cannot recognise that fly-tipping is getting worse in Haringey. Residents want action and not hollow promises and rhetoric from a Labour Council that has continually let them down."
Cllr Bob Hare, Lib Dem Environment spokesperson, adds:
"The problem with fly-tipping and the lack of effective Labour response in Haringey is not a new thing. Last year the Lib Dems pressed Haringey Council to show why it had one of the highest incident rates in the country. Here we are one year on and the incident rate has increased. These figures clearly show that Labour are failing to prevent fly tipping and their enforcement is clearly not providing any significant deterrent."
