Lynne Featherstone

MP for Hornsey and Wood Green

Crouch End

I got the understudy’s part in a play ‘The Innocents’ based on Henry James’ ‘Turn of the Screw’ at the old Mountview Theatre on Crouch Hill when I was about eight years old. I never made it to the professional stage but they do say politics is showbiz for ugly people…

Crouch End is a wonderful, vibrant area with a centre with really individual shops, lots of young people and families – and good schools, good housing and good restaurants. The Clock Tower defines the centre of the shopping area and the old Hornsey Town Hall is a magnificent art deco building which an Independent Board of Trustees is hopefully taking forward to being a new arts, leisure and education centre – one day!

Parking has been a huge issue in this centre and there were times when I thought rival camps in Crouch End might come to blows over proposed Controlled Parking Zones. There is a very strong traders’ association, the phenomenal Crouch End Chorus (very well known) and many very good residents’ associations. The Parkland Walk is a linear park which is very special – along a disused railway line. Still unspoilt and allowed to grow wild, it is used and much loved by local people.

My Liberal Democrat Ward councillor colleagues here are: Paul Strang and Dave Winskill.
