I was married in Woodside ward. It was at Haringey Civic Centre in April 1992. I had no premonition when I stood there taking my vows that one day I would re-enter the very same building as a local politician and later as Member of Parliament.
Haringey Council has fancy new offices right in the middle of Wood Green at River Park House but the old Civic Centre is still here and being used for council meetings of all sorts – including full council – and weddings and citizenship ceremonies.
Needless to say the Labour administration wanted to sell it off (in the teeth of a recession when they would get tuppence for it) and move into another council building – without even consulting properly the great community groups who were already in that other building. The scheme was dropped after the users and the Lib Dems combined forces. Haringey Council also tried to close the FAITH plant centre – which is one of the very few places where people with learning difficulties can work and be trained.
One of the key assets in this ward is the New River Community Sports Centre with its excellent facilities and coaching for young people from the area. Tottenham Hotspur players do some coaching there.
We are currently campaigning for regeneration to Wood Green High Road. The High Road is a great place to shop, but there’s always more than can be done, from making sure that the council sort out dumped rubbish promptly, and making the road more pedestrian and cyclist friendly. There has also been a massive increase in litter since the Labour Council introduced fortnightly rubbish collections.
